Stroke Art Fair 2019

STROKE Art Fair 2019

The STROKE Art Fair, Munich’s renowned fair for urban, contemporary and street art, is underway until Sunday, and it may well be the very last one in Munich. This time it’s not at its usual location – Praterinsel – but at the Alte Akademie – and if you’ve never been to the Alte Akademie, you must pay it a visit.

It’s a gorgeous old Jesuit college from the 16th century in the heart of the city. You’ve probably walked past it a hundred times while shopping in Munich’s pedestrian zone. And this weekend, you can pop inside.

STROKE Art Fair has been going for a decade now, founded by Marco Schwalbe, and is one of the most famous in Germany. The idea has always been to bring art to the masses – encouraging guests to engage with artists, and to discover – and buy – urban and contemporary art directly from the artists in a relaxed setting. But every year, ticket prices increased, a result of the ever-increasing location prices in Munich, and STROKE’s future is now in doubt.

So get down there and support STROKE – artists from across Europe will be presenting their work. I’m particularly keen on catching Bildmacherei‘s 2cm-tall figurines, which are playful and extraordinarily detailed. And London-based Paul Larricart has some gorgeous stencil/collage pieces. For those into photography, Marijon Walter takes the most beautiful photos: Just take a peek at her Instagram.
