I’ll leave NYE tips for another post, but here’s a round-up of what else is going on in Munich this week, to help you work off those Christmas calories.
It’s impossible these days to catch LaBrassBanda in a small Munich club. They’re now far more used to playing consecutive sell-out gigs at the Olympiahalle or headlining festivals. So here’s a tip – LaBrassBanda’s Manuel Winbeck will be playing Substanz tomorrow night, with his band Monobo Son. Tickets cost just 12.40 €.
On Tuesday the city gives itself over to NYE parties, and Wednesday leaves everyone recovering with hangovers, so let’s move on to Thursday.
If you’re lucky enough to have snapped up tickets for Verdi’s opera La Forza del Destino at the Nationaltheater on Thursday then you should be very excited – I went last night, and it was spectacular. Anja Harteros plays Leonora, and I don’t think I’ve ever heard a more beautiful voice on the stage. The production was modern, racy and breathtaking. The performance is completely sold-out, so if you don’t have tickets, I’m afraid you’re out of luck this time.
However, if you’re after a little high-brow culture, there’s plenty of other fantastic events for you to check out. Austrian composer Alban Berg adapted Büchner’s Woyzeck in the early 1920s and his version will be performed at the Kammerspiele on Thursday and Friday night. Tickets are available between 6 € and 19 €.
Portuguese songstress Maria Rui will be playing in Milla on Friday night, with tickets costing just 10 € on the door. And if you reserve in advance, tickets cost just 8 €.
If you’ve yet to hit the January sales, you can do it in style (without the stresses and strains of Munich city centre) at the Nachtkonsum flea market on Friday night. Entrance costs 3 € and you can shop from 5pm until midnight.
So folks, that’s about it for this week. Short and sweet. I hope you’ve all had a wonderful Christmas and I wish you the very best for 2014! Thanks for staying with me!
