Next Week in Munich – Loyle Carner, Voodoo Jürgens & Dives

The first snow of the season has fallen, I’ve had my first Glühwein and for the very first time, I have an advent wreath – it’s starting to look a lot like Christmas. If you’re keen on doing more besides eating Bratwurst and drinking hot mulled wine at the markets (really?), here’s what’s coming up this week:

Tollwood is on in full force, and there are plenty of events lined up this week. Interestingly, there’s an English-language pub quiz on Tuesday from 7pm, which looks like great fun. On Thursday, Weston-super-Mare’s Ryan Inglis will be performing at Tollwood. The British singer-songwriter has been living in Munich since 2016, and he’ll be providing mellow afternoon entertainment at The Silent Night.

California’s Emily Jane White is at Milla on Monday, as part of her European tour. Her music is haunting; soft and powerful at the same time. Tickets cost 18 € on the door.

Loyle Carner is playing a sold-out show at the Muffathalle on Tuesday. Hip-hop’s nicest artist has had a pretty good year – in November he played his biggest show yet at London’s Alexandra Palace, and earlier this year he released a new album (the follow-up to his 2017 Mercury-nominated Yesterday’s Gone) and performed at Glastonbury. If you have tickets, enjoy!

Also on Tuesday, one of my favourite Austrian musicians is in town, playing at the Alte Kongresshalle. Voodoo Jürgens has a prolific body of work, and released his latest album earlier this year – ’S klane Glücksspiel. If you’re a fan of black humour and if you can understand his Austrian dialect, it’s set to be a super fun evening.

There’s an interesting talk on at the Lenbachhaus on Wednesday evening: “The role of art in times like these”. It’s a political discussion hosted, in part, by the NS-Dokumentationszentrum, and it sounds like a fascinating look at our world at present.

On Thursday, Viennese band Dives are playing at Milla. They’ve already toured with Courtney Barnett and, bizarrely, have played with the Vengaboys, and they’re currently on a very busy tour of Germany.

The weekend is a little quieter, but that gives you plenty of time to eat, drink and be merry at Christmas markets. Have a good week, folks!
