Next Week in Munich – The Magpie’s Cabaret, Lydia Ainsworth & Restaurant Day

This whole food truck thing has finally arrived in Munich. The trucks have been around for a while, but now it seems like there are three or four street food markets a week at different locations around the city. This week there’s Hall of Taste at MMA, the MUC Food Lovers Market at the Blumengroßmarkthalle, and there’s an after-work food truck outside the Amerika Haus on Thursday.

Kiesza’s at the Theaterfabrik on Monday, and there are still tickets for the show available (25 €).

On Tuesday, rapper MC Fitti is playing Backstage Werk, and tickets are still available for the gig. He rose to fame with his 2012 breakthrough song 30 Grad, which now has over 5 million YouTube views, and is currently promoting his latest album Peace.

Also on Tuesday, Canadian Lydia Ainsworth is at the Kranhalle. Tickets cost 15 € on the door, and she’ll be supported by Munich’s Uphill Racer.

I’m off to a cabaret and burlesque show at Pigalle in Isarvorstadt on Wednesday. Organized by Elsie Marley, The Magpie’s Cabaret will feature drag artist Faye Ashes and Russian burlesque dancer Anja Pavlova. Call to reserve beforehand (phone number in the Facebook event), and the show starts at 8pm.

There’s a fun concert at the Import Export Kantine on Thursday. Electrolandler’s performing, and afterwards, former LaBrassBanda member Oliver Wrage will take to the stage to jam. Entrance costs a harmless 6 € and the concert starts at 9pm.

The TNT theatre group are performing Shakespeare’s The Merchant of Venice at the Amerika Haus on Thursday and Friday (matinee and evening shows), if you fancy a play in English. Tickets cost 20 € and you must reserve in advance. Oh, and there’s an after-work food truck from 4pm Thursday outside the Amerika Haus.

On Friday, the third Hall of Taste street food market is taking place at MMA. It’s now a weekly occurance, so don’t worry too much if you can’t make it this Friday – there’s one the Friday after too! If you are going, get there early to avoid the queues, and try the Napo Amo pizzas.

Also on Friday, there’s a talk on grocery shopping without plastic at the plastic-free supermarket Naturlieferant in Haidhausen. Katrin Schüler will be presenting her ideas on how to lead a more sustainable lifestyle. If you’re keen to use less plastic, get down there for six.

Restaurant Day is back on February 15. If you haven’t heard of it before, it’s a “food carnival”, where anyone and everyone can set up a bar, cafe or restaurant for the day – wherever you choose. There are three pop-ups in Munich this time: Dirty Flame Break in a private apartment, M³Kitchen with lots of veggie and vegan food and communal cooking in Combinat 56.

If you haven’t had enough street food this week, check out the MUC Food Lovers Market at the Blumengroßmarkthalle in the Schlachthofviertel on Sunday. Munich’s best Weißwurst butcher, Magnus Bauch, will also be there, if you’re hungry for a hearty Bavarian breakfast. The market opens at 11am.
