There is much talk about the new Bauhaus Museum, opening in Dessau later this year, and I’ve read lots of articles on the Van Gogh exhibition opening in Frankfurt in autumn, but Munich also has its fair share of great exhibitions lined up for 2019. Here’s a rundown:
There are two very different but very interesting exhibitions planned for the Kunsthalle this year. The first is a focus on the Samurai, and launches on February 1st, 2019. It features Samurai armour from a collector in Texas, and brings the Japanese warriors to life.
The second focuses on Canadian impressionists from the late 19th and early 20th century.
If you haven’t made it to the Kunsthalle’s excellent current exhibition, Thrill of Deception, put your boots on and get down there – it only runs until January 13th, and it’s definitely worth your time.
One of Africa’s most prominent artists is exhibiting at Haus der Kunst from March until July 2019. Ghana’s El Anatsui’s entire fifty-year career will be covered at this very comprehensive exhibition, which explores the different paths the artist has taken over the years.
From October onwards, Haus der Kunst will be showing a fascinating photography exhibition by Chicago-born Theaster Gates, called Black Image Corporation. The installation artist will create a series of new sculptures for the Haus der Kunst exhibition, and it will also feature images from the Johnson Publishing archives. A similar exhibition took place last year in Chicago (at the gallery that Theaster Gates founded), and this website provides a great summary as to the importance of the Johnson Publishing archives in American black culture.
Kiki Smith is returning to her roots (the New Yorker was born in Nuremberg) in February, exhibiting prints at the Pinakothek der Moderne. The exhibition is the first comprehensive collection of her work, with hundreds of prints on display.
The Brandhorst is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year, and from May onwards will exhibit its “new” collection – works that have been added since the museum’s opening a decade ago.
