Laim often gets left out. People talk about Westend and its cafes, Pasing and its market – but the in-between is often forgotten. Wrongly, really, for there are so many reasons to visit Laim – Konditorei Dettenbeck has fantastic cake, the Speisezimmer is one of my all-time favourite places to go for a relaxed lunch, the Einstein bouldering gym is great (and has, unexpectedly for a not-very-fancy sports centre, good ice cream and good coffee), and now, there’s Cafe Steinchen.
Its location is a former car park close to Basic on the Agnes-Bernauer-Straße. It opened just last Friday and I paid them a visit on Saturday. Sisters Laura and Alexa Steinke are its creators, and at present, they have permission to run their container cafe until the end of the year.
Shipping containers are perfect for temporary use projects – as Container Collective, Cafe Gans and Bahnwärter Thiel can attest – and they make for an alternative, creative atmosphere, which does Munich no harm at all. All of the furniture is second-hand, either found at flea markets or collected from friends and relatives, and it lends the cafe a laid-back charm.
Cafe Steinchen serves Tilmans beer, great coffee and cake, and Weißwurst breakfasts at the weekend. They’re planning on plety of events to keep you entertained as you eat: workshops for kids and concerts are in the pipeline.
Opening a cafe in the middle of a pandemic hasn’t been easy – hop on the tram and head out to Laim to support this brilliant project.
