Munich’s Fruit & Veg Boxes

There is nothing better than a crate of locally-grown, organic veg with soil still stuck to it, is there? Thankfully, it’s simple to enjoy high-quality fresh produce in Munich thanks to to great butchers (like Herrmannsdorfer) and organic, regional and seasonal fruit and veg boxes. I’ve tried a few over the years, and have listed the ones I know and love below:

Amperhof Ökokiste
Amperhof has been growing organic fruit and veg since 1980. They have set days for deliveries to certain districts (Westend on Fridays, for example), and you can take what comes from their pre-prepared veggie boxes (whatever is in season) or pick and choose to put together an individual box. Amperhof has also branched out to sell organic cosmetics, amazing cheeses and great bread. And it’s entirely nonbinding, which means you can order for a week, then again in another three weeks or months, should you be away. You just have to pay a €10 deposit on the first crate you receive.

Kartoffel Kombinat
Founded in Obermenzing in 2011, Kartoffel Kombinat really got going in 2013, following a successful test phase just involving friends and family. Now, they deliver all over the city, and if you become a member, you can get involved in harvesting the fruit and veg too. You receive 46 fruit and veg boxes a year – there are no deliveries over Christmas, and you can choose a further 4 weeks to sit out – so Kartoffel Kombinat really only makes sense if you’re in Munich most of the time, but you can test out their boxes for 6 weeks without signing up for an entire year. You don’t get to choose the veggies you receive, but this has meant that I’ve experimented with a lot of produce I would otherwise never have tried.

Waldgärtner
This is one I haven’t tried, but it comes heartily recommended from Davina from True & 12, who knows a thing or two about excellent produce. The farm is in Höhenkirchen, not too far from IKEA (Brunnthal), and founder Ziggy is responsible for setting up the region’s first CSA initiative. You pay a monthly fee (€100) to get involved. By becoming a member, you also pledge to help out on the farm at least twice a year – harvesting, planting etc, and the farm to table principle is a brilliant way to get kids interested in where their food comes from.

Isarland Ökokiste
Isarland has been delivering organic veg boxes since the nineties. Based in Riem, they deliver across Munich, including suburbs, on set days. If you’re out, they can leave the boxes in the garage, with a neighbour, wherever you choose. Try out a Schnupperkiste to start, which contains dairy products, bread and eggs alongside the fruit and veg.

Ökokiste Kirchdorf
Like Amperhof, this fruit and veg box company is located close to the Amper river, to the north of Munich. Alongside fruit and veg, they deliver produce such as local lamb, Federweißer (hello!), organic ice cream and organic, delicious apple juice. Delivery is free when you order a minimum of 16 € worth of goods.

Höhenberger Biokiste
Located to the northeast of Munich, this organic fruit and veg box delivery service is famed for its extras – their cheeses, hams, and loaves of bread. Sneak in a Mandelecke for an immediate treat when the box arrives.
