The Westend hair salon JK Jasmin Kohlmayer (who incidentally also stocks Beyer’s Oil, the beard oil I wrote about on Tuesday), has launched a cool project called #munichhairs, in cooperation with Westend agency Direttissima GbR. The idea is simple, yet innovative – a presentation of Munich’s hairstyles – from Schwabing to Giesing, Maxvorstadt to Isarvorstadt and everything in between.
Portrait photographer Raimund Verspohl took the photos, and Jasmin and her team styled the models – both hair and make-up. The project is an ongoing, playful examination of the city’s hairstyles and you can stay up-to-date with it on Facebook and Twitter.
I went for a much needed haircut at JK Kohlmayer to ask Jasmin more about the project. A passionate hair stylist, Jasmin has been working in Westend for the past fifteen years and has had her salon on Schießstättstraße for the past four years. She enjoys the creativity and constant development involved in her profession, and had noticed a difference not only in hairstyles, but in the fashion and lifestyles in different parts of Munich, and wanted to dig a little deeper.
I asked her what she thought of Munich’s hairstyles in general. “Safe”, she said, after a pause, “safe, but modern and elegant. There’s not a lot of trash to be seen. Yet although Munich has a style as a whole, each district is slightly different”. When I first heard about #munichhairs I tried to imagine what sort of hairstyles I’d link to Munich’s different districts – and was completely at a loss. When I first saw the video below, it all made sense – Jasmin’s totally hit the nail on the head.
