Roecklplatz

Roecklplatz is one of my favourite restaurants in Munich. Their schnitzel (and this has been vouched for by a Bavarian) is one of the best in Munich. The concept, the decor, the beer garden in the summer and the high-quality Med inspired food – I love everything about it.

In the heart of the Dreimühlenviertel and a stone’s throw from the Isar, the restaurant was opened four years ago, inspired by Jamie Oliver’s Fifteen project, Roecklplatz launched to give unemployed and under-qualified youngsters an opportunity; an entrance in the world of gastronomy. The young team members must learn to cook, they must learn to serve – there’s a real team-feeling and they’re constantly learning about the world of cuisine. The European Social Fund and the Bavarian state have both been important in providing funding for the restaurant, although donations are always welcomed.

And now to the food – the menu changes monthly. The chefs use fresh,seasonal ingredients to create salads, pasta dishes (I adore the truffle ravioli) and fish and meat dishes. If you’re overwhelmed by the a la carte offers, there’s also a set-menu you can try, complete with wine recommendations (2,3 or 4 courses are available).

The restaurant’s design is industrial. Aluminium pipes line the walls, dozens of bottles of wine and cremant are stacked on shelves, condiments line the walls. In summer, the beer garden is leafy, a relaxing place for a post-stroll salad. If you’ve got one of those “to-do in 2012” lists, add the schnitzel experience at Roecklplatz to it, you won’t regret it!
