Pizzesco is a tiny little pizza bar near Gasteig. It’s not fancy, but it is seriously popular, and every time I’ve been, I’ve had to wait for a table. As the evening grows busier and busier, more and more tables are brought from the back room to squeeze some hungry guests into the restaurant.
Alongside traditional Italian pizza, the restaurant also does gluten-free, lactose-free and spelt pizzas – and, should it take your fancy, you can order a dough with khorasan wheat for 1 € extra. Oh, and if you are gluten intolerant, they do gluten-free beer too (and a good one at that, from the organic brewery Lammsbräu) and gluten-free desserts, including creme brulee.
I can wholly recommend the “mix fantasia” – a gigantic platter of different pizzas for just 14 € (for two people). The pizzas change regularly, and this time was perfectly suited to the freezing temperatures outside. We had truffle pizza, a hearty potato and bacon flan, a spicy aubergine and tomato pizza and creamy buffalo mozzarella pizza…the list goes on. Seriously. We had seven different types of pizza. The crust is thin and crispy, and each topping is so damn good.
If you’re after a quick bite to eat before you head to a gig at the Muffathalle or the Gasteig (or are around for a movie at Lichtspiele, as I was last night), I totally recommend stopping by Pizzesco. If the restaurant’s full, or if you are in a real rush, you can buy a slice to take out. Prices are reasonable, service is friendly, unpretentious and authentic, and the food’s superb. Oh, and Woody Allen stopped by when he played the Gasteig a couple of years ago and loved it. Can’t argue with that, right?
