A friend of mine celebrated her birthday in a bakery at the weekend, which is a birthday celebration that’s right up my street.
Thalkirchen’s Urban Bakery is a little bit out of the way for many Münchners (it’s in a side street close to the Brudermühlstraße U-Bahn station), but totally worth hunting out for a morning pastry and coffee. They bake their own bread and quiche, and have the most wonderful homemade cakes on offer – lemon tarts, walnut philadelphia shortcrust pastries, French eclairs, croissants and the most buttery brioche you can imagine – all baked without additives. They also sell a wide variety of artisanal Italian lemonades, if you’re after a treat.
The cafe itself is light and modern – colourful saucer patterns adorn the walls, and the wooden flooring makes the bakery seem bigger than it is. It’s a cafe where families come to brunch, where friends meet for coffee and cake. Thalkirchen doesn’t have a great deal of cute cafes/bakeries, and it’s a cosy place to meet to while away a few hours of the day. In summer, there’s space outside for a few tables and chairs, meaning that if you close your eyes and bite into your chocolate eclair in the morning sun, you can wholly believe you’re sat in a Marais cafe.
I took a baguette and a walnut loaf home with me, and they were both delicious – fresh, flavoursome and homemade.
