I’ve been a big fan of the Viehhof beer garden and open-air cinema since it first opened, five years ago. It’s a family-friendly, relaxed space to while away a summer’s evening. The beer’s good (Ayinger), the food stands offer something for everyone, and the films are excellent (there are also plenty of movies showing in English).
The beer garden will reopen next Thursday, and the cinema’s set to start on Monday, June 8, weather permitting. The first film shown will be French-language Mommy, a Canadian drama directed by young Xavier Dolan. Critics have praised the black comedy, saying it’s Dolan’s best movie yet.
Also showing in June (June 16) is an Austrian movie I first saw at the Viehhof a couple of years ago – Der Knochenmann. It stars Josef Hader as a private detective investigating the disappearance of a man called Horvath in a small Austrian village. The film is a true black comedy, and one of the most disturbing and simultaneously hilarious films I’ve ever seen.
Besides the comedies, there is food for thought. Laura Poitras’ Citizenfour will be showing in English on June 10, focusing on Edward Snowdon and the NSA scandal.
The line-up for the rest of the summer is to follow, but the full program for June is already online here. Should the summer not be as sunny as we hope, film date changes will be announced on the Viehhof’s Facebook page. Cinema tickets cost 9 € (7 € reduced).

There are also plenty of cultural activities going on at the Viehhof over the summer. There’s an exhibition focused on the Rossmarkt, a former horse market at the Schlachthof, where dealers from across Bavaria came to sell their horses, and there are also several music evenings – Viennese dream poppers Little Big Sea will play (June 13), as will Munich’s Blek Le Roc (July 05) and Radio Minga (July 18).
The beer garden’s open Monday to Thursday from 6pm, 4pm on Fridays, and from 2pm at the weekend. All information can be found online.
