Next week in Munich – Tollwood, Per Kirkeby, Rosa Laub

It’s a little quiet on the culture front, but nevertheless, there are still a few worthwhile events on in town.

The football’s taking up everyone’s time on Monday. But it’s not on until 10pm, giving you time to check out some FilmFest movies in the early evening. I highly recommend you check out Everything We Loved, a New Zealand film showing as part of the FilmFest, showing at 5:30pm in City 1. Tickets are available for 9 € online.

If you’re wondering where to watch the game, Giesinger Bräu are hosting a public viewing in the Gaszählerwerkstatt, near the Westfriedhof. Beer is, of course, supplied by Giesinger Bräu and you’re welcome to bring some meat for the grill.

On Tuesday, multiple Academy-award winner Arthur Cohn will be in Munich, presenting a gala evening at the Gasteig, as part of the FilmFest. Unfortunately tickets are sold-out, but if you follow the FilmFest on Twitter, you’ll be able to virtually stay up-to-date with what’s going on. And if you head down to Isartor (until July 5), you can walk the red carpet as if you were at the Oscars – it looks like a whole lot of fun.

Summer Tollwood starts on Wednesday. I’ll be publishing a post on what and who’s on over the course of the festival, but for those of you planning your week, the big opener on Tuesday (the market won’t be open, it’s just open for gig-goers) is Bob Dylan. I know this is sacrilege to all who worship Bob, but I saw him last in 2010 at Hop Farm, and his voice just didn’t do it for me. I love Dylan’s music (Girl from the North Country is one of my all-time favourite songs), but he’s 73 now – and some of that spark has faded. Still, I do think you should see Dylan once in your lifetime – if you have tickets, I wish you a wonderful time.

Otherwise, well worth seeing this week are the CubaBoarischen (Thursday, in the Musik-Arena), playing a delightful mix of Caribbean and Bavarian music, who I caught at the Isarnetz awards in May.

On Thursday, the Pinakothek der Moderne will open a brand new exhibition featuring the work of Danish sculptor, poet and painter Per Kirkeby. Etchings and bronzes will be featured at the exhibition, which will run until mid-September.

If you’re a student, you can enjoy culture and clubbing in one on Thursday, with the FilmFest’s “CultureClubbing” event. First off, Ping Pong Summer in Munich’s City Kinos, a Michael Tully directed movie set in the mid-eighties starring Susan Sarandon:

Michael Tully will be present to answer questions afterwards, and then there’s the clubbing – entrance is free until half past midnight, and the first 100 students to arrive at the Milch Bar get a free drink.

On Saturday, the percussionist Martin Grubinger is in town, performing at the Philharmonie. I’ve seen him live before and he took my breath away – the man can drum incredibly fast. If you don’t manage to catch him on July 5, don’t worry – he’s playing a total of three times at the Philharmonie this July.

If you fancy a trip further afield, the Rosa Laub festival is taking place on Saturday and Sunday, close to Passau. Make sure you check out Schmied Puls, travelling from Vienna for the festival.

The annual Gärtnerplatz OpenAir is taking place on Sunday – it’s a completely free afternoon and evening of theatre and music. There’s a program for youngsters from 2pm, followed by a concert of mixed pieces led by Venetian conductor Marco Comin, from 7:30pm. It’s set to be a cultural feast, and if you’re after a place for the evening performance, you should arrive early.

Should partying be more your thing, the Rave Autonomica Open Air (aka Bum Bum party – English-speakers’ favourite ice lolly) is taking place in the Kesselhaus on Sunday too. It gets underway at midday and tickets are available for 15 €.
