If you love Irish music, head down to Strom at Poccistr. today to catch The Kilkennys. The four-piece band are full of energy, and if you fancy a good jig, it’s definitely worth heading down to Strom:
And in Milla tonight, Warsaw-based musicians Paula and Karol are playing from 8.30pm onwards. They sing in English and have a wonderful, catchy feel to them.
Yesterday also saw the launch of the new Inge Morath exhibition in the Amerika Haus. The Austrian-born photographer married the playwright Arthur Miller, re-locating to the USA in 1962. There she gave birth to her first child, Rebecca Miller (now a promininent actress and director in her own right, and married to Daniel Day Lewis), and remained in the USA. Having photographed the likes of Audrey Hepburn, Clark Gable and Marilyn Monroe, she went on to enjoy continued success, working with Philip Roth, Jean Arp and many more.
The exhibition will run until July 26 in the Amerika Haus, and focuses on her photographs documenting the Nevada set of Arthur Miller’s film The Misfits (this was when he was still married to Marilyn Monroe). If you appreciate good photography, it’s a must-see exhibition.
On Wednesday, the annual DOK.fest will kick off – this time around it’ll be the 28th international documentary festival in Munich. The program is available to download as a PDF, and tickets for each film cost 8 € on the night (7.50 € in advance). I love the sound of Matthew’s Laws, a documentary about a very talented autist, directed by his friend, the Dutch independent director Marc Schmidt. The Last Days of the Arctic also sounds amazing, it’s a very important topic, and the trailer shows some stunning cinematography:
Also on Wednesday, Modeselektor are in town – at 9pm in the Gabriel Filmtheater, you can catch a movie about the Berlin electronic group, entitled “We are Modeselektor” – and afterwards the group play a DJ-set in the Rote Sonne. 6 € for the movie, and 15 € for the DJ set.
Berlin-based Art Brut are celebrating their ten-year jubilee in 2013, and they’re in Munich on Wednesday to celebrate with Bavaria. They’re not everyone’s cup of tea:
Thursday sees the re-opening of the Kulturstrand on the Corneliusbrücke. As ever, it’s outdoors and free, showcasing bands from Munich and beyond. The opening concert features German soul singer Kaye-Ree.
My tip for the week is Woodlands at Milla. Tickets are 12 €, and it’s the most perfect lazy spring music – ideal for balcony breakfasts, or evenings with a good bottle of wine in the garden.

On Friday, Diplo’s musical project Major Lazer is at the Kesselhaus. Originally a collaboration with Switch, the pair parted ways in 2011, and DJs Jillionaire and Walshy Fire were enlisted to help with the live shows. The new LP Free the Universe was released in mid-April, and Diplo’s at the Kesselhaus to promote it.
Also on Friday, the wonderful Chilly Gonzales is in town – sadly, his show has been sold-out for months (I got a ticket this time around, hurrah!), but he’s back with friends in July. If I were you, I’d get your ticket asap, the show will be sold out in advance again.
Saturday’s the Lange Nacht der Musik in Munich – well worth the ticket price if you want to catch a lot of music in one night. And the Eine Welt Haus has classical Indian music for 5 € on Saturday – which I’m most certainly going to go see.
Oh, and don’t forget – May 9 is Father’s Day! And May 12 is Mothering Sunday.
