Next Week in Munich: Peter Doherty, Bleu Roi & The xx

Hi folks! Here’s a round-up of what’s on next week in Munich:

Firstly, I keep meaning to write about the Kammerspiele’s welcome cafe. Have you been? It’s a gathering for locals and refugees, a chance to exchange ideas, thoughts and experiences. The website details what’s on and when – this Monday there’ll be a cinema special, it starts at 6pm (and runs until 10pm) and entrance is free.

Also next week, there’s an interesting interactive experience called Top Secret International at the Glyptothek. It actually premiered in December, but it was off my radar. Entrance is every 15 minutes, and shows are in English and in German – a tour of international intelligence services, where participants get to manage their own mission, while wondering who’s observing who. Tickets cost 20 € and it sounds like a thoroughly fascinating night out. Plus, it’s a chance to explore Munich’s oldest museum.

Zeit columnist Harald Martenstein is at the Literaturhaus on Tuesday. He’s released a book about his first great love – cinema. He’s a very funny man, and if you’re a fan of his column, it should be an entertaining evening. Tickets cost just 10 €.

Pete Doherty is at the Muffathalle on Tuesday. He released his latest album, Hamburg Demonstrations, in December – it’s only his second (completely) solo album. To me, Doherty will always be the rock’n’roll star of the mid-noughties – a pale, drug-ravaged, sweaty man dating Kate Moss, and it’s something of a surprise to me that he’s still making music. And rather lovely music it is too.

Northern Ireland’s Two Door Cinema Club are at the Tonhalle on Thursday – I can’t believe they’ve already been around for a decade. They released their third album, Gameshow, last autumn, and it’s received pretty positive reviews. One of the singles has been used for FIFA 17, and Annie Mac’s been playing it a lot on her radio 1 show.

There’s an interesting performance on at the Muffatwerk on Thursday and Friday. It’s a dance/theatrical performance featuring Tobias M. Draeger, titled Daily Mindness. It’s the story of a man’s compulsion to organize the mess that surrounds him, combined with the desire to tear down the walls in his mind. It’s a quest for freedom:

Also on Friday, The xx are playing a sold out show at the Zenith. If you have a ticket, have a wonderful time – I find their November single On Hold so beautifully haunting.

Lovely Swiss band Bleu Roi are at the Orangehouse on Saturday. Jennifer Jans’ vocals are so delicate, and they’re a young band well worth supporting.

And finally, do check out the new Amerikahaus exhibition, After Selma, which is running until May 12. It opened on Thursday, and the photographs are beautiful.
