Next week in Munich – Andy Warhol, Monacothek, The Elwins

Shocking news from A Bavarian Sojourn this week, that snow is already covering certain parts of Bavaria again (ok, ok, it was the Zugspitze…but still!). Positively, this cold weather means the summer break is officially over and gigs are back in full swing.

Saturday, September 14 saw the grand reopening of the Pinakothek der Moderne, following its renovation. This means that the temporary exhibitions at the Schaustelle (with their rooftop ping-pong tables) is sadly over, but that wouldn’t have been so much fun in winter anyways. The good news is that an Andy Warhol exhibition’s on, featuring largely unknown works from the artist, and runs until November 17.

Until September 28, there’s a pop-up store in the Hofgarten (between Residenz and the Englischer Garten, U-Bahn Odeonsplatz), providing you with everything you could possibly need for Oktoberfest. The Monacothek sells dirndls, earrings, scarves…and everything is made in Munich. If you’re looking for an original, handmade accessory for Oktoberfest, it’s well worth popping by.

On Monday, you can catch Berlin band Me and My Drummer at the Muffathalle – tickets cost 18 €.

On Friday, you can spend the night in the monte mare spa – well, until 3am. If you fancy sitting in the sauna ship at midnight and hearing the Tegernsee waves lap against the boat, do pop down. I can also recommend mucbook’s party at the Feierwerk on Friday. mucbook’s a lovely little German-language blog about cultural events in the city, and they’re about to launch their first print edition – hence the celebrations. Entrance costs just 8 €, and it looks set to be a fun little party.

The Atomic Cafe is playing host to Ontario indie rock band The Elwins on Friday. They have this lovely retro west coast sound going on, so if you’re missing summer, you can reminisce:

Now, I know that Saturday will see most of you at Oktoberfest. I’m sadly away for the weekend, but if I weren’t, I’d most definitely be in the Muffathalle, with T.C. Boyle. He’s presenting his latest novel San Miguel. Tickets cost 14 € in advance and the reading starts at 8:30pm. The style is completely different to Boyle’s other work, and it’s told through the voices of three women in the late 19th century. It’s earnest and evocative, and I can imagine a reading to be extraordinarily haunting.
