Next week in Munich – A Zombie Apocalypse Party

January seems to be flooded with high-culture in Munich. There seems to be so few good musicians touring right now, yet there’s a plethora of wonderful events at the Bayerische Staatsoper. Last week’s Steps & Times from Kenneth MacMillan and the colourful character Frederick Ashton was delightful, and on the January 11, the opera house will play host to Wagner’s masterpiece The Flying Dutchman.

We start off the week with poetry. The Lyrik Kabinett on Amalienstr. is hosting a poetry slam and Brighton-born rapper, singer and poet Dizraeli will be on-hand to provide his take on politics, love, drugs and Britain’s dark sides. There’s something of a modern Dickens about him.

Jack London’s The Call of the Wild has been translated to the stage for the Kammerspiele on Monday. Perhaps London’s best book, the novel recounts the tale of a domesticated dog who gradually becomes feral – it’ll be interesting to see how it translates to the stage.

On Wednesday, head to the Staatstheater am Gärtnerplatz for blackOUT – a dance performance that kicks off Gärtnerplatz’s season of dance, with music from Johann Sebastian Bach.

If all of this culture is overwhelming you, why not let your hair down at a zombie apocalypse party (yes, you read that correctly!) at Backstage Werk on Thursday. In order to find out quite what a zombie apocalypse party entails, you’ll have to head down there, but with beer at 2,50 € a pint, you can’t go far wrong! It kicks off at 9pm and costs 5 € on the door (4 € in advance).

If you’re into something more funky, try Jazz&Milk’s modern afrobeat sounds at the Atomic Cafe on Thursday. And if that’s not your style, the Rote Sonne is celebrating a year of Munich Techno, starting at 11pm.

And then – it’s Friday 13th. But don’t let that put you off partying. Amnesia International will be happening in the Glockenbachwerkstatt, with a fusion of two live bands: one, a Latin-reggae band and the other, a drum and e-bass collective. The Beatpoeten (literary monologues mixed with techno) will be played in Hansa39 on Friday too, along with several German punk bands, if that’s more your scene.

The second weekend in January is a surprisingly quiet one (are we all at the gym burning off those Christmas pastries?) but there’s a jazz jam session at Sunny Red, which could be worth checking out on Sunday night.
