Next Week in Munich – Cat Power, Kocherlball & Sommernachtstraum

Hey! How’s your summer going? It feels a little like we either have Sahara temperatures or heavy rain at the moment. I’m dreaming of some middle ground, which would make all of these summer parties more enjoyable.

American singer-songwriter Cat Power is in Munich on Monday, promoting last year’s Wanderer album. She’s at Backstage and tickets cost €39 on the door. The 2018 album was her first in six years, and continues to showcase her beautiful, beautiful voice. The Lana del Rey collab, ‘Woman’, is particularly gorgeous.

Head to Hugendubel at Marienplatz after work on Thursday to catch Dana Newman – of YouTube channel Wanted Adventure – as she presents her brand new book “You Go Me On The Cookie”. She writes about the peculiarities of German in such a lively way, and the book is a great idea for a gift for someone learning German.

The Kunsthalle is launching a new exhibition on Friday, dedicated to Canadian impressionism. It features 120 paintings from 36 artists that are not particularly well known in this part of the world, and I am very excited to check it out. The artist himself is giving a tour of the El Anatsui Haus der Kunst exhibition on Friday, a week before closing. Unsurprisingly, it’s sold-out, but if you managed to snap up tickets, have a wonderful time. I adored the exhibition, and would recommend you head down there before it ends on July 28th.

Also on Friday, Munich’s radio station M94.5 is hosting a summer party at the Ampere. Local band Umme Block will play before the DJ sets get underway. Tickets cost €18 on the door.

And finally on Friday, Munich band Moop Mama are celebrating their tenth birthday at Tollwood. I saw them at Tollwood a couple of years ago and have never had so much fun at a gig, so if you can grab some last-minute tickets, do so.

Another birthday is being celebrated this week – the wonderful restaurant Roecklplatz will celebrate its eleventh birthday with free beer, a BBQ and music from 4pm onwards.

If you’re after a more energetic way to spend your Saturday, catch the S-Bahn to Freising for their Altstadtfest, which also gets underway at 4pm. There will be live music, plenty of activities for kids, and of course beer on tap from the local Weihenstephan brewery.

I’ve never actually been to Munich’s Sommernachtstraum – the Olympiapark festival that ends with a spectacular fireworks display (I’ve only ever caught glimpses of the display from nearby gardens), but this year it sounds pretty fun. Roisin Murphy will be headlining on Saturday, Munich’s own Pollyester will play, and Kim Wilde (yes, Kids in America Kim Wilde) will also be performing. The music gets underway at 3:30pm and the fireworks start around 10:15pm. Tickets start from €29 and are available online.

On Sunday, the annual Kocherlball is taking place at the Chinesischer Turm. Set your alarm early if you fancy checking it out, it starts at 6am. Oh, and be sure to don your best Tracht.
