Next Week in Munich – Manu Delago, Wallis Bird & Mokoomba

I’ve been so busy recently, I’d be glad of a bit of a rest, but there are so many concerts and exhibitions on right now. Here’s what’s coming up this week…

The American Drama Group is paying homage to Martin Luther King on Monday, with a performance at the Gasteig about his life. Tickets cost 23 €, and it sounds a wonderfully informative way to spend a Monday night.

A new portrait photo exhibition at the Pinakothek der Moderne opens on Tuesday. Featuring photos from the 1920s and 1930s, works from the likes of August Sander, Florence Henri and the wonderful Germain Krull will be on display.

Austrian percussionist Manu Delago is at Milla on Tuesday. He’s getting a lot of positive reviews in the UK at the moment, where he’s based, and his solo album Metromonk was released at the end of January to acclaim. Here’s a nice little Clash Magazine piece on him. Tickets cost 20 € on the door and the show starts at 8:30pm.

Irish singer-songwriter Wallis Bird is at Hansa39 on Wednesday. She’s currently on a very comprehensive tour of Europe, promoting her latest album Home, released in autumn of last year. She’ll be supported by Canadian artist Sam Vance-Law, who’s releasing his debut album Homotopia this year. He’s pretty wonderful too, so get to the gig early. Doors open at 8pm, tickets cost 25 €.

Zimbabwe band Mokoomba are at the Ampere on Thursday. They’ve just released a new album Luyando, and right now, they’re one of Africa’s hottest young bands.

Alex Clare is playing a sold-out show in Hansa39 on Sunday. A former estate agent, he was rocketed to fame when Microsoft used his song Too Close for an IE advert. He’s been on a European tour since the end of January, singing from his album Tail of Lions, released in November.

A final reminder – you have until Friday to check out the American Realities exhibition at the Amerikhaus – entrance is free, and Danish photographer Joakim Eskildsen takes the most magical photographs. If you’re not sure if you’ve seen his work before, you may well have come across his series of portraits of Romani (he took over 200 photos for the series).

The weekend is going to be boozy – Braukunst follows last week’s Finest Spirits’ festival, at Munich’s MVG Museum. I really love Braukunst – the location’s unusual, and it’s always full of lovely, slightly tipsy beer lovers. If you go, do try Hofbräu’s Hallodri – it’s a really hoppy beer from the Munich brewer, and I’m rather partial to it. Tickets cost 20 € for the day and are available online here (do buy online, it saves you a lot of queuing time).
