Next week in Munich – Fish’n’Blues, CSD, Akademie’s Jahresausstellung

I know most of you will be having trouble looking past tonight’s World Cup finale (COME ON GERMANY!), but here are a few ideas for the coming week. Thankfully, there are lots of summer parties on this week to take your mind off the fact that the World Cup’s over.

Monday’s fairly quiet, giving you and your hangover a chance to recover. On Tuesday, New York duo Phantogram are playing Hansa39. Tickets are available for 17 € in advance, and the show kicks off at 8:30pm.

On Wednesday, Fish’n’Blues is on in the Glockenbachwerkstatt. I’ve never been, but a friend is headed there this Wednesday and has promised to report back. The evening features live blues music, and Guido Berg will be busy in the kitchen cooking up delicious fish dishes. Dinner’s served from 7:30pm, and the gig gets underway around 8:30pm.

If the weather’s good and you’d prefer to spend your Feierabend outdoors, Lehel’s La Stanza are hosting a summer party at the Praterstrand. It starts at 6pm, entrance is free and Campari will be handing out welcome drinks for thirsty party-goers.

Morcheeba are at Tollwood on Wednesday, and it’s hard to believe that they’ve been going for nineteen years now, disregarding a short hiatus. Last autumn they released their eighth studio album, Head Up High, with this deliciously catchy single Gimme Your Love:

Tickets cost 37 € and they’ll be playing alongside 2raumwohnung, the German electropop band most famous for their single 36 Grad, released in 2007.

New Zealand band Fat Freddy’s Drop are at Tollwood on Thursday, who are an excellent choice if you fancy a dance. Tickets are pretty expensive though, at 40 € a head.

Well worth catching is Australian beatboxer Dub FX, who’s at Backstage on Thursday. If you haven’t seen this YouTube clip, you’re one of the very few people who hasn’t.

In terms of art, there’s a new exhibition on at Lothringer13 – The Elephant Test. It’s the first exhibition at the venue under the direction of Dana Weschke and Jörg Koopmann and will feature seven artists, working with different media to explore the possibility of a productive uncertainty. Head down there for 7pm for the vernissage.

On Friday, Villa Stuck is hosting a summer party, and if you’ve yet to visit the dramatic neoclassical villa, you shouldn’t miss the party. You can enjoy a tour of the building’s old rooms at 7:30pm, and food and drink will be on offer. Entrance is free!

Over the weekend, Projekt Freundschaft is hosting a festival of events celebrating friendship, and it all kicks off with a party in Pathos. Luca Rose is playing, whose music I adore:

Also on Saturday, the OBEN OHNE Open Air is taking place at Königsplatz. There are several big name bands playing, including Munich’s own Claire and the FM4 favourites Bilderbuch. Hip-hopper Alligatoah will be headlining. The festival’s completely sold-out, so you’ll have to find some touters if you want to pay a visit.

However, Saturday’s highlight for many Münchners is the Christopher Street Day, Munich Pride’s big party. The parade will start at Marienplatz at midday, and will head to Lenbachplatz, Sendlinger Tor, the Glockenbachviertel and will end at Viktualienmarkt. In the evening (10pm to 5am), you can enjoy a party at the Rathaus.

Rounding up the week is the Parov Stelar Band at Tollwood on Sunday. Tickets are 37 € and I would love to see them in action. Here’s one of my favourite songs:

And of course, all of this week you can catch the Akademie der Bildenden Künste‘s Jahresausstellung. I visited yesterday, and there are some really cool things there – one of my favourites was a film about fungus, entitled Life Between Walls, by Bianca Kennedy and Felix Kraus. There was one really gruesome bit involving iron filings and a scalpel apparently burying into flesh, where I almost fainted, but the attention to detail was spectacular. I also thought Klasse Wähner‘s lip syncing to the likes of Rod Stewart’s Baby Jane and Whitney Houston’s I Will Always Love You huge fun.

As part of the Jahresausstellung, Karo Tak will be hosting an evening of yoga, activism and food (in English) at the Akademie tomorrow. There are a couple of vegan cooking workshops from 4:30pm to 6:30pm which sound interesting.
