Next week in Munich – Douglas Dare, Trust, George Ezra

Firstly, a humongous thank you goes out to everyone who took the time to vote for Arts in Munich for Isarnetz’s Content für München awards – I’m thrilled to have won first prize at the awards ceremony on Friday evening. It was a fun, fascinating event with lots of networking.

On Monday, Japanese duo Coconami are playing at the Volkstheater to celebrate the release of their new album “san”. The pair are super creative with their instruments, and Nami has the dreamiest voice. Tickets cost 16 € from München Ticket. On Tuesday, London rock three-piece Bleech are playing Milla, to promote their second studio album Humble Sky. I’ve heard their live show will blow you away – head down there for 9pm.

Douglas Dare, described by Mary Ann Hobbs as “very strange and wonderful” is playing at the Atomic Cafe Tuesday night. I’ve had his debut album, Whelm, on repeat for the last few days – it’s absolutely beautiful and I urge you to check him out.

If poetry’s more your thing, the Isar Slam‘s on in the Ampere Tuesday night, tickets cost 6 € on the door and six German slam poets are lined up to battle (if you’re keen on giving poetry slamming a go yourself, get there early and sign up – the first three to do so can take to the stage too!).

The big gig on Wednesday is Dieter Meier, playing at the Freiheizhalle. I’m not taken with his music, but he has a cult following in Germany, so expect the venue to be full.

Thursday’s a public holiday (and Father’s Day!), so there’s a bunch of parties going on. Superrave is on at Backstage, featuring one of the world’s most respected techno DJs – Ben Sims – and Berlin’s Thalstroem will be playing live. Tickets cost 18 € here. If you’re wondering what to do on Father’s Day, head down to ARTMUC on the Praterinsel to discover contemporary artists.

I’m keeping my fingers crossed that I’ve managed to get tickets for George Ezra’s show with Hauskonzerte and Mixed Munich Arts. If you didn’t know about the gig, become a fan of Hauskonzerte on Facebook to keep up-to-date with all of their latest intimate gigs. I’ve written about Hauskonzerte’s gigs before, and I still maintain that Kevin Devine’s Hauskonzerte show is one of the best I’ve ever seen.

If you didn’t get tickets for Ezra’s show, Toronto’s Trust is playing the Kranhalle on Thursday. Trust is a one-man-band with the handsome Robert Alfons, who makes music you could easily file next to Depeche Mode. Oh, and they have had some really cool tees made for their European tour, designed by digital artist Stephen Schramm, so if you enjoy the gig, stop by the merch stand before heading home. Tickets cost 15 € on the door.

Rodrigo y Gabriela are in Munich on Friday, playing at Backstage Werk. I’m really surprised tickets are just 28 € – they’re a huge band. I’m really enjoying Torito from their new album 9 Dead Alive at the moment, and they put on a spectacular live show.

And on Saturday, the Organic Dance Music Festival is taking place at the Zenith. There are some huge acts there – Moderat, Modeselektor, Schlachthofbronx, Fritz Kalkbrenner and Boys Noize, to name a few. Tickets are available for 50 € here. Neutral Milk Hotel are rounding off the week and bringing us into June with a gig at the Kammerspiele – which is unfortunately completely sold-out. To those who are going – I’m very, very jealous.
