Next week in Munich – Cafe Cosmos, William Fitzsimmons, Will Samson

How are we at the end of July already? This summer’s just flying by. Thursday is the busiest day of the week this week, with lots of excellent concerts on.

The week starts with beautiful sounds from Will Samson, who’s playing at Theater Heppel & Ettlich, up near Münchner Freiheit. Tickets cost just 10 € and he is well worth seeing live.

From Tuesday, July 29 until Sunday, August 10, the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater are at the Deutsches Theater. The New Yorkers are one of the most famous international dance groups around, and they’re back in Munich for the first time in seventeen years. The preview is on Tuesday, and the premiere Wednesday, with tickets costing 29 € upwards.

Munich Rocks! is on Thursday at the Ampere. If you fancy checking out Munich’s most talented young bands, the free event is well worth your time. This Thursday the Munich four-piece Getting Private in Public will take to the stage, alongside duo Oda & Sebastian and indie rock band 50/50.

Sacramento singer-songwriter Chelsea Wolfe is at Hansa39 from 9pm on Thursday, presenting Pain is Beauty, her fourth studio album released last autumn.

However, it’s well worth heading out to Schondorf near Ammersee on Thursday night to catch William Fitzsimmons on his European summer tour. Tickets cost 25 € on the door, and the venue seems to have some pretty cool bands playing every now and again – it’s worth bearing in mind for the future.

Also on Thursday, Studio Isabella is screening Drive (OmU) as part of the Filmkunstwochen. I’m in love with the soundtrack, and most of the planet is in love with Ryan Gosling, so there’s every reason to stay up late and watch it – it’s showing at 10:30pm. Should you be awake enough afterwards to go out and party, Rote Sonne is celebrating its ninth birthday the whole weekend – starting Thursday.

And finally, the Theatron Musiksommer starts on Thursday, but I’ll write more about that in a separate post.

If you fancy spending your weekend at a festival, Prima Leben und Stereo is on over the course of the weekend. The likes of Mighty Oak, FM Belfast, Fiva and Left Boy will take to the stage.

The Bayerisches Genussfestival is on at Odeonsplatz from Friday to Sunday, with wine from Franken, fish from the Ammersee and Lake Constance and cheese and schnapps from across Bavaria. There are also seminars over the course of the weekend – the “bio&regional” wine seminar at 1pm on Saturday looks particularly interesting, and on Sunday, you can try Bavaria’s answer to prosecco – in a seminar with wine expert Nicole Retter (midday, the perfect time for a glass of bubbly).

On Saturday, Cafe Cosmos are hosting a summer party at the Volksküche in Brienner Straße. Kick off’s at 6pm and music will be supplied by the Cosmos resident DJs.

If you’re a fan of electronic music, Saturday and Sunday sees an electro music festival at the Neue Messe München, called #UR.

From Saturday onwards, the Farbenladen is hosting an exhibition by photographer Hannah Fee, entitled “Selfies – the pool of narcissism”. The vernissage starts at 6:30pm on Saturday, but the exhibition runs until the end of August.

And should the weather turn over the course of the week, I highly recommend you pay a visit to the Museum Brandhorst. There’s an exhibition featuring work from fashion and portrait photographer Richard Avedon on. Alongside his fashion work, he also took some beautiful photos of the American West, which you should take a look at if you have chance. And if the weather remains sunny, you’ll still have plenty of time to pay a visit when the nights draw in – the exhibition runs until November 09.
