At 7pm today, the Haus der Kunst will host a discussion focusing on how we should remember the Holocaust. As a German Studies graduate, it’s a topic I read a lot about. How do you demonstrate sympathy and remembrance while simultaneously striving for a new, better Germany? We cannot forget National Socialism, but we can deal with and accept the past. Artists such as Anselm Kiefer were among the first to directly deal with the German guilt of Nazism post-WWII, but many other artists, including Wilhelm Sasnal, currently exhibiting in the Haus der Kunst, have dealt with the theme just as comprehensively.
Sasnal’s exhibition, in collaboration with the Whitechapel Gallery in London, began in early February and will run until May. His fascinating Maus series is taken from Art Spiegelman’s comic book (where Nazis were portrayed as cats, Jews as mice, Poles as pigs and Americans as dogs).
Tonight, Jörg Heiser, co-editor in chief of frieze, will lead the discourse on the important topic of remembering.
