As I mentioned back in January, a very comprehensive exhibition covering the oeuvre of Ghanian-born mixed-media artist El Anatsui will be displayed in Haus der Kunst from 8 March, 2019 until 28 July, 2019.
The exhibition covers El Anatsui’s fifty-year career (he’s now 75 years old), but the focus is on works from the last two decades. Never before has such a huge exhibition been dedicated to El Anatsui, and it’s a chance to see how the artist has developed over the decades, from his imposing Broken Pot series in the 1970s to his 1980s wood works (which are relatively small scale) to his huge, magnificent metal works from the early 2000s.
Three works have been created especially for this Haus der Kunst exhibition – two are indoor and one is on the building’s facade. The outdoor piece is titled Second Wave, and is a 110 metre long installation. It incorporates thousands of offset printing plates from a Munich printing house and signifies the lack of permanence in our world.
Currently, no tour has been scheduled in English, but keep an eye on the website just in case.
