Monday sees Germany’s first game in the 2014 World Cup, this time against Portugal. I know very, very little about football, and will probably only catch a few games, but I’ve heard it’s rather popular…! Thus, I’ve made a list of nice places in Munich where you can watch World Cup matches. Places with a nice atmosphere, with friendly staff and with good, cold beer.
I have been waxing lyrical about the Viehhof since it opened on Wednesday – it’s my favourite beer garden in Munich. Great for families, a little bit alternative and everyone there is easygoing and generally lovely. They are showing most matches in the circus tent on the site, and some are projected onto the Schlachthof wall.
Kennedy’s, Kilians, Ned Kelly’s
Between them, the three pubs will be showing all World Cup games over the course of the next month. The best way of finding out which games are on where is via their Facebook fan pages: Kennedy’s, Kilians, Ned Kelly’s. Kennedy’s will be screening Germany’s first match against Portugal on Monday (followed by Iran V Nigeria and Ghana V USA, should you stay up that late).
The open-air cinema at Olympiasee will only be screening the Germany games, but the set-up sounds rather nice – 6 € for entrance including a glass of prosecco. Entrance this coming Monday for Germany V Portugal is from 5pm (the game starts at 6pm). If you don’t get into the Kino am Olympiasee to watch the game, the Olympiastadion‘s close by – where you can watch for free on the city’s biggest screen – albeit with hundreds of others. Make sure you arrive a couple of hours before kick-off.
Munich’s oldest beer in the traditional Augustiner Keller beer garden – there’s room for 5,000 guests, and I rather like the idea of being able to take a picnic to watch a football match. Reservations aren’t possible.
If you fancy something a little fancier – think cocktails instead of beer, loungers instead of plastic seats or beer benches, then the Mangostin beer garden will be your cup of tea. They have erected two 80 inch screens for the World Cup and offer exqusite Asian-inspired cuisine.
Not the most ideal location considering the summer we’re enjoying, but if there is a downpour, you can walk/run from the Viehhof beer garden to the confines of Substanz relatively quickly.
Tollwood starts on July 2, meaning that they’ll be showing the quarter finals onwards.
I like the Muffathalle’s beer garden – it’s a lovely place to end up after a stroll along the Isar. The venue will be showing various games throughout the World Cup – keep checking their website to see what they have planned.
