From tomorrow until July 19, Summer Tollwood is on at the Olympiapark. Celebrating culture from across the world, the festival is playing host to some pretty big concerts over the next month, including Patti Smith and Joan Baez. I’ve rounded up the best of the best for you:
Konstantin Wecker – Friday, June 26
First up on my list of Tollwood gigs not to miss is Konstantin Wecker, famed for singing about Angela Merkel’s breasts. The irreverent singer-songwriter is celebrating his forty-year career with a summer tour around Germany at the moment. Tickets are available for 42 € here.
Jackson Browne – Tuesday, June 30
Jackson Browne’s playing at Tollwood next week. Tickets are available for 55 € here. Browne was actually born in Germany, in Heidelberg, where he lived before moving to California as a child. Favourites such as Take It Easy and Running on Empty are guaranteed.
Róisín Murphy – Thursday, July 09
I know a lot of people find some of her earlier stuff with Moloko a bit annoying, but I’m a big fan of songs like Tell Everybody and You Know Me Better from her 2007 album Overpowered. I must admit, I haven’t heard her latest album Hairless Toys, released last month, at all, but reviews have been overwhelmingly positive. Tickets are available for 42 € here.
Folk singer and political activist Joan Baez is playing at Tollwood on July 11. Tickets are already sold-out, so I’ll keep this brief, but if you managed to snap some up, you’re in for a treat.
Playing a lot of songs off her 1975 debut album Horses, poetic Patti Smith’s looking back on the past forty years fondly. She’s playing a lot of big gigs this summer – including Glastonbury’s Pyramid Stage, London’s Roundhouse and Paris’ Olympia, and Munich’s very lucky to have her. Besides the music, there’s lots else going on at Tollwood this summer. Finnish artist Miina Äkkijyrkkä will be exhibiting sculptures made from car wrecks, a statement against industrial livestock farming, and artist collective NEOZOON will exhibit along a similar vein – their installation focuses on the exploitation of animals, criticizing consumerism.
French artist Olivier Grossetête will be creating the Munich Rathaus from cardboard over three days with the help of Tollwood visitors, and Australian performers Strange Fruit will also be providing spectactors with a visual feast with their aerial show.
The markets are open until 11:3opm and food will be served until 1am, so you can check out all that Tollwood has to offer before grabbing a bite to eat and doing a spot of shopping.
