The first Münchner Bierinseln is taking place tomorrow, a result of Germany’s ever-growing love for craft beer.
The event gets underway at midday, giving you time to enjoy a hearty Weisswurst breakfast at the Gaststätte Grossmarkthalle in the morning. Entrance costs 5 € per location, and everywhere you go, you get to try at least three different beers. I’ve had a peek at the program and have come up with a few of my favourites:
The Frankfurt brewers BraufactuM are presenting their latest creations at the chop house, including a new Firestone Walker and a Brooklyn Brewery beer. The glassmakers Spiegelau will also be present, to offer you the best tips on beer glasses.
There are lots of beer activities taking place the Neuhausen brewery Richelbräu on Saturday, including a tasting of the brewery’s CasaNova beer, a short course focusing on brewing and several short films.
Getränke Oase, Gabelsbergerstraße 54
The Getränke Oase is my favourite drinks market in Munich, with the loveliest, most helpful owners. They’ll be hosting Markus Hoppe from the Bavarian brewery Hoppebräu (close to the Austrian border), who will present three of his craft beers, all with delightfully Bavarian names – Vogelwuid, Wuider Hund and Wuide Henna. The Getränke Oase will be putting on quite a rock’n’roll party, and if all that beer is too much, there will be snacks on offer to help you sober up.
Biervana, Hohenzollernstraße 61
A friend told me about Biervana a couple of months ago, and I’m won over by their name. They’ll be offering Scotland’s BrewDog beer (which seems to be taking over the world), and the lovely Crew Republic team will be on hand to present their Munich craft beers. If you haven’t tried a Munich Summer yet, you really must.
Taphouse, Rosenheimer Straße 108
I’m yet to visit the Taphouse, but this weekend is an excellent reason to head down there. They’ll be presenting Camba Bavaria and other craft beers are available for 2€ a glass.
Kiosk Reichenbachbrücke, Fraunhoferstraße 46
Alas, the famous kiosk won’t be hosting any tastings, but they are still celebrating the first Münchner Bierinseln! When you buy three craft beers, you pay for just two.
To meet up with other tipsy, likeminded craft beer lovers, head to the cosy Niederlassung (Glockenbachviertel) from 8pm for the after party.
