As many organized readers seem to be searching Arts in Munich for Christmas gift ideas, I’ve decided to update the list I created last year and add some new discoveries. If you’ve not started Christmas shopping yet, you still have plenty of time – we still have six and a half weeks to go.
Food & Drink
TasteTwelve – I was given a TasteTwelve book for 2015, and have made excellent use of it. I got to try Neuhausen’s Broeding, ate wonderful salmon in Shane’s Restaurant and when vegetarian friends came to visit, we headed to Gratitude for dinner. The book offers a main course for free – you simply have to call and mention TasteTwelve when booking a table, and the cheapest main course is deducted from the bill at the end.
HEILAND – The Bavarian beer liqueur is a fun gift with great packaging. If you’re too lazy to head into the city centre to buy a bottle, you can order online here.
Refugin – I wrote about this new gin a couple of weeks ago. 100% of the gin’s profits go to the SchlaU-Schule, a school set up to help refugees learn German, and it’s a great gift if you’re trying to be ethical this Christmas.
Mono Tee – The minimalistic packaging first caught my eye – it’s gorgeous. It’s a nice little extra for someone who appreciates good design, and you can pick up a carton at a whole host of places around the city.
Amanero – The makers of Mondino have created a digestif, which is available to buy from Dallmayr, VollCorner Vino oder Sentivini.de for 39 €. Thirty herbs have been included in the blend, and there are just 2,000 bottles on the market.
Style
KAUFHAUSKOLLEKTIV – From Iris’ BEAUTIFICATIONproject bags to cute button earrings from ohrstecker, KAUFHAUSKOLLEKTIV has so many lovely locally- and lovingly-made products.
SOUVE BAG COMPANY – The Munich label has a flagship store near Gärtnerplatz, with all of their beautiful canvas and leather goods available. This leather purse is stunning.
the casual MONKS – Perhaps more suited to those no longer living in Munich, the clothing range is cute, and the postcard designs very eye-catching.
Culture
Haus der Kunst annual pass – An annual ticket for the Haus der Kunst costs just 50 €, and with it you can visit as many exhibitions as you like, and anyone you take along gets in for a reduced fee.
Deutsches Museum annual pass – The Deutsches Museum is impossible to take in in a day. You’d need a week to see everything properly, which is why the annual pass is such a fantastic idea. It costs 52 € for adults and 32 € for kids, and is the perfect Christmas gift, as membership starts with the new calendar year.
Pinakothek/Brandhorst annual pass – Now, I tend to visit the Pinakothek/Brandhorst on a Sunday, when entrance costs just 1 €, but if you know someone who’s passionate about art and hates the crowds, it could be worth splashing out on an annual pass for them. Buy online for 9o € here.
Interiors
Acapulco – Benjamin Caja founded Acapulco just last year and has already established himself as a maker of fine chairs. They’re expensive (370 € or upwards), but comfortable, stylish – and made in Munich! I love this burst of yellow.
BENS – BENS focuses on high-quality, luxurious interior pieces, both from Munich and across the world. They have a small online store (they do Danish Sort of Coal shampoo, hurrah!) but you’re best off visiting their store in Georgenstraße to snoop around.
