The Munich Opera House is one of my favourite buildings in Munich. It’s grand, imposing, and very regal. I think it’s always fun to be able to put on some glad rags and head out to the ballet or the opera every now and then. Last week I went to see the orchestra perform Messa da Requiem, as a gala concert for Verdi’s 200th birthday. It was conducted by the marvellous Zubin Mehta, who has deservedly won so many awards for his musical abilities. The German and Italian presidents both showed up with their wives, and we all sang the national anthems of the respective countries before settling down to a passionate performance.
If you live in Munich, you really must make time to visit the opera or the ballet at least once. Maybe it’s not your thing, but you have to try it, just to take in the architecture, the stunning interior and the world-class performances on offer.
Head to the bar in the break, to sip on champagne and stare at the beautiful dresses the ladies are wearing.

And if you’re after a pre-ballet/opera dinner, I can highly recommend the Conviva im blauen Haus, just around the corner next to the Kammerspiele. The food is always fantastic. Last week I had the loveliest deer goulash, mash and French beans wrapped in bacon.
