A hotel is opening in Munich’s Glockenbachviertel tomorrow – Flushing Meadows, a sixteen room design hotel located in an inconspicuous building on Fraunhoferstraße.
I paid a visit to watch the sun set over the rooftops on the Flushing Meadows’ bar terrace. Just four floors up, the views are pretty incredible:
Just behind the Maximilianskirche, you can spot the Alps. With barkeeper Manu Pinciroli’s recommended port and tonic aperitif in hand, there are few better places to be in Munich on a balmy summer’s eve.
The Munich trio Arnold Jäger Werner are responsible for the hotel’s conceptual design. Best known in the city for their party-throwing abilities (they founded the edmoses bar, the Bob Beaman Club and the Maximilianstraße’s pop-up club ZKV), they’ve turned their hand to hotels, and asked several personalities to get involved to help ensure attention to detail in every aspect of the hotel’s design. Charles Schumann (the revered founder of Schumann‘s at Odeonsplatz, one of Germany’s best known bars) was consulted, as was Marc Streitenfeld (the composer who works closely with Ridley Scott, and was nominated for an Academy Award for American Gangster), Cathal McAteer, the founder of cult label Folk, the furniture designer Norbert Wangen, and countless others. Together, they added the details to the hotel’s loft rooms.
The loft studios are to be found on the third floor of the hotel. The exposed concrete ceilings are up to four metres high, and each room is unique in its design.
Up on the fourth floor, light and airy penthouse studios with stained wood floorings and fabric covered walls offer views to the Alps in the south. Each room features a painting from young Berlin artist Maximilian Rödel, and some of the penthouses have their own terrace.
The Artnold Jäger Werner trio also created Superdanke! – the smoothie and juice bar on the corner of Türkenstraße and Schellingstraße, and they’re planning on opening their second juice/smoothie bar in the Flushing Meadows hotel soon.
Room availability can be checked by sending a quick email to the team. Penthouse studios cost from 100 € per night, while loft studios are available from 115 € per night. All toiletry products are from the vegan organic firm Walachei.
The hotel bar is open to locals too – you don’t have to be a guest to enjoy a drink on their terrace. It’s a decadent treat to sit above Munich’s rooftops with a refreshing aperitif.
