Next Week in Munich – Weininseln, STROKE & Gramatik

There’s another packed program of activities in Munich this week – there’s plenty of music and art to keep you busy.

Minnesota cult dreampoppers Low are playing at the Ampere on Monday, promoting their latest (highly acclaimed) album Ones and Sixes. Tickets cost 25 € on the door, and support comes from The Drones’ Mike Noga.

Slovenian-born, Brooklyn-based Gramatik is playing at the Technikum on Wednesday. I love his music, which is difficult to pigeonhole, and his Munich show is set to be fantastic. Tickets cost 27 € on the door.

From Thursday until Sunday, the STROKE art fair is on at the Postpalast. As usual, lots of great street artists will be exhibiting their work, and be sure to check out the very cool tattoo artist Miriam Frank’s work. Entrance costs 10 € and the fair starts on Thursday at 6pm.

Belgian electropop band Oscar and the Wolf are at Strom on Thursday, promoting their debut album Entity.

As for art, the Kunstbau is opening a new exhibition on Klee & Kandinsky, which will run until January on Thursday, and the Pinakothek der Moderne is opening an exhibition on Amelie von Wulffen’s art from the past fifteen years.

On Friday, Walk Off the Earth, most famous for the song of 2012, Somebody I Used To Know will be playing at Kesselhaus. Tickets are still available for 30 €.

On Friday, Vienna’s FM4 radio station is taking over the Rote Sonne, and are bringing their DJs over the border to party with Munich. The party gets underway at 11pm and entrance costs 10 €.

Also on Friday, ARTisFACTION.Lounge is taking place from 8pm-midnight in the Pinakothek der Moderne. As with the ARTisFACTION event back in April, the aim is to discuss art in an informal setting, and art historian Laura Sánchez Serrano will be discussing “what is art?”with the philosopher Thomas Steinforth.

From Friday to Saturday, the fourth Münchner Weininseln will take place in the city. The program’s available online, and you can essentially wander from one wine store to another, sampling good wines and getting a little merry on the way.

And head to Neuhausen on Saturday night to enjoy the best of local music, as part of the annual Neuhauser Musiknacht. If you fancy making an evening of it, I can recommend going to Der Hollabusch for dinner – I recently had a deliciously autumnal pumpkin pasta there. The Freiheiz will open its doors to the M94,5 radio station, who will feature four local indie bands and Blek le Roc will be playing Malzraum. The full list of bands is online here.

Also on Saturday, the Dave Matthews band is playing at Zenith. It’s hard to believe that Matthews formed the band in the early nineties – they’ve been going for 24 years, and are still so successful.

The Notwist’s Micha Acher has a side project in Alien Ensemble, and they’ll be playing at Milla on Sunday. If you’re wondering what to expect, their music isn’t very much like Notwist’s music at all – see here. Tickets cost 18 € on the door.

On Sunday, the 60th Munich art expo kicks off in the Postpalast (I’m not sure how this works with STROKE on at the same time, but I guess the events are related) and will run until November 1. More coming up on this in a separate post.
