Next week in Munich – The Burning Hell, Monaco Summer, Re-Act

Tomorrow is September already, and it’s really not long until Oktoberfest kicks off. Things are slowly getting going again after the summer break, but gigs are still few and far between.

On Monday, Seattle singer-songwriter Julie Byrne will be in town, playing an intimate Hauskonzerte gig. If you fancy checking her out, send an email to register for the show asap, as there are only a limited number of tickets.

If you don’t manage to snap up tickets for the gig, the Distillers Bar (Münchner Freiheit) will be celebrating a Monaco Summer at their summer party. As this August has been rather pathetic, I suggest you head down there to enjoy what the Distillers’ do best (cocktails) and drink until it feels like summer. They’ve got Munich’s first pizza truck – Pizza Innovazione – on board to provide stone oven pizzas, and Munich label franzmünchinger will provide a welcome gift to all who turn up.

On Tuesday, Impala Ray’s at Milla, supporting Canadian folk collective The Burning Hell. Tickets cost just 9 € on the door, and it is set to be a delightfully mellow evening. For a video that completely romanticizes Munich, check this out:

Galerie Kullukcu is currently hosting an exhibition featuring Munich-born artist Christine Tanqueray, which will run until September 6. Musician Daniel Murena will be performing at the venue on September 5 (9pm), should you fancy combining an evening of music and art.

From Thursday, the Kunsthalle and Harry Klein are joining together, in what looks like a really cool event. Entitled Re-Act, visual artists – including OctoPussies and Jens Moire will perform alongside young artists from Munich’s art academy and Harry Klein’s DJs. Tickets cost just 8 € and includes entrance to the afterparty in Harry Klein.

Also starting Thursday, the Pinakothek are hosting an exhibition focusing on Swiss artist Stephan Melzl‘s paintings. I must admit, I don’t know his work, but I really like his use of colours (see header image).

For the month of September, downstairs. Galerie will be taking over Mixed Munich Arts. The takeover will combine art, political discussions, gigs, performances and parties, and if you head down there for the grand opening on Friday night, you can see what you can look forward to over the course of September.

Ohio’s Simeon Soul Charger are at Milla on Friday night. They seem to play Munich gigs rather often, which is fine by me, as their music’s rather catchy and danceable. Tickets will cost 17 € on the door.

Outside of Munich, up toward Augsburg, there’s a lovely sounding herb festival taking place at the Schlossgut Odelzhausen on Saturday. Alongside delicacies with plenty of wild herbs, artists and carpenters will be presenting their work at the festival. Gustavo, from the atelier Art Gus, will also be at the event, with hand-painted postcards, natural wood items and handmade jewelry. It sounds like a really lovely day out for the whole family – just before the summer holidays come to a close.

On Saturday night, the Reithalle will host a flea market, running from 5pm to midnight. In competition, the Feierwerk will be hosting a flea market for women only – Nachtkonsum costs 3 € entry and will also run from 5pm – midnight. If you’re looking for a new dirndl for Oktoberfest, your chances of finding one at one of these flea markets are pretty high!
