Apart from visitors from down under, there are quite a few other nice gigs going on. Named after an eighth arrondissement Parisian street, Rue Royale are a perfect autumn band – laid-back, folky music. The Nottingham duo are playing in Cafe Muffathalle as part of a European tour on Monday:
City Slang project Get Well Soon is playing the Theaterfabrik on Monday, sponsored by Prinz mag. The project is headed by Konstantin Gropper, who rose to fame having written tracks for the Wim Wenders movie Palermo Shooting (which has a great soundtrack by the way, Beth Gibbons, Iron & Wine, Nick Cave, Calexico and Beirut are all on there) is in town promoting his third album. He’s quite something:
On Tuesday, Beirut are playing the Tonhalle. I’m bummed I didn’t get a ticket for the show in time, it’s been sold out a while. If anyone has a spare, do let me know, I’ll pay you back in scones and flapjacks. On Thursday, you can check out Joy Division inspired band A Place to Bury Strangers, at 59:1. I quite liked them when I first heard them, back in 2008, now it’s all a bit too noisy for me (am I getting old?):
The rest of the week is quieter in terms of concerts – probably due to the start of Oktoberfest. Yes, ladies and gents, the biggest beer festival in the world is back. The 179th Oktoberfest starts on Saturday 22nd September. Do you already have your dirndl ironed and laid out? I have friends counting down to the minute!
