Edita Gruberova to leave Bayerische Staatsoper

The Slovakian opera singer whose voice has touched many over the years is to leave her role at the Bayerische Staatsoper in 2014, it has emerged. Gruberova has appeared less and less often in opera productions at the Staatsoper in recent times, and the 65-year old soprano has stated that she was under the impression that the Bayerische Staatsoper no longer had as much interest in working with her.

She was apparently recently offered a role in the tragic Donizetti opera Roberto Devereux in 2015, a role that she decided to turn down. In 2010 she played the part of Elisabetta in Roberto Devereux, garnering rave reviews – the Bayerische Staatsoper admitted that it was “an opera for a queen – a work made for Edita Gruberova!”. While the soprano feels that the Bayerische Staatsoper no longer appreciates her work as in previous years, she is sorry to say goodbye to the passionate audience that turns up to see her perform in Munich: “The audience here is wonderful – they know their stuff, they know exactly when to clap”.

Gruberova will continue to work for the Bayerische Staatsoper until 27th July 2014, before bowing out for the final time.
