Vivi D’Angelo: Food photography

Despite having not yet met in person, Vivi D’Angelo and I have crossed paths several times in Munich – we have mutual friends, go to the same exhibitions and share an appreciation for delicious and aesthetic food.

Whereas I simply enjoy eating, Vivi is a fantastic food photographer, and hosts regular food photography courses in Munich. Her passion for food photography began following a degree in journalism and communications, when she paid a chance visit to the bi-annual FOODPHOTO festival in Tarragona, back in 2011. It’s the only festival in the world dedicated to the specific branch of food photography, and Vivi realised it was a subject that was right up her street – she loved high-quality produce, cooking and baking, and was a passionate amateur photographer. It had the makings of her dream job.

Vivi took to learning the trade herself – and was soon commissioned by the likes of BMW Catering, the guerilla cooking group Tisch & Thymian and the organic Herrmannsdorfer group.

The creation of a food photography workshop came from Vivi’s struggles to find a decent, all-encompassing course that teaches you about the subject. She agrees – most of it is about practice, but there are hints and tips that go a long way to helping a photographer improve.

The workshop is aimed at beginners in the world of food photography – people who want to learn the basics, who enjoy photography but don’t necessarily have the know-how to take beautiful photos of food. Vivi provides insights into how best to use your cameras for food photos, and alongside the theory, offers props – from crockery and place mats, to various produce, to allow people to try out what they’ve learnt. The workshops take place in a beautifully light yoga studio in Munich, allowing for plenty of sunlight and a relaxed atmosphere.

On Saturday, September 13, Vivi will host her next food photography workshop – which will last around six hours, costs 119 € and will take place in the Hemma yoga studio in Neuhausen.
