Free & Easy in Backstage

The annual Backstage Free & Easy festival started a couple of days ago, and will continue until August 8.

The festival features bands from around the world, screens movies and hosts a feast of parties over its eighteen-day run, and there’s plenty lined up this year to get your teeth into. Everything’s free, but if you’re especially keen to catch a band, they now offer reservation tickets (including one drink) for a very reasonable 8 €.

I’ve rounded up a few gigs I’m particularly keen to catch, but the full program is available online.

Saturday, July 25
Impala Ray‘s busy doing the Bavarian festival circuit this summer (you can also catch him at PLUS in Freising, Stereowald, Brass Wiesn and the Theatron), and he’ll be playing from 8pm on Saturday alongside Triska and Traunstein five-piece The Marble Man in Backstage Halle. Pop-folkers Triska make the loveliest, balmiest summer music, so grab an ice-cold beer and sway along.

Oh, and as part of the festival, there’s a flea market for kids from 9am-1pm, and a big fashion flea market from 5pm – spend, spend, spend!

Thursday, July 30
If it’s not too hot to dance, the Frantic Flintstones are playing from 9pm in the Backstage Halle on Thursday. The band, fronted by Chuck Harvey, have been going for almost thirty years now, and are still going strong.

The independent 2012 movie Starlet is showing outdoors on Thursday too, at 10:15pm. The film focuses on Jane, a 21-year-old adult movie star, and the unlikely friendship she strikes up with an 85-year-old woman called Sadie. The New York Times labelled it a “critic’s pick” and it’s received all-round positive reviews.

Saturday, August 1
Vienna’s Wanda are in town on Saturday (if you need a reservation ticket for a gig, this is it). They’ll be playing alongside Wellness and Ulm trio VAN HOLZEN. After the gig, there’s an after-party with DJ Albert Royal.

And if metal’s your thing, there are plenty of big metal bands playing over the course of the festival.

Let me know what you’re looking forward to seeing at the festival!
